Aerial Covered Conductor Systems, including both Spacer Cable Systems and Tree Wire, have been around since 1951. Starting at the 5kV and 15kV levels, applications quickly evolved upward to 25-, 35-, and 46kV, culminating in 69kV being introduced in 1995, and then 115kV in 2019. As testimony to their effectiveness, covered conductor systems are now employed in over seventy-five countries on all seven continents. In this paper, Aerial Covered Conductor System components will be reviewed, with features and benefits of each described. Construction configurations will be presented, and comparisons will be made between Spacer Cable and bare wire construction options, illustrating advantageous Right-of-Way (ROW) height reduction and width compaction. Special emphasis will be placed on how Aerial Covered Conductor Systems help meet the challenges faced with transmission construction and how it allows for multi-circuits in an existing ROW, shortening project timelines and saving land.
Due the small footprint of a 115kV Spacer Cable System, utilities can avoid lengthy land acquisition and permitting processes, allowing them to achieve their capacity needs and realize revenue much sooner.
Covered conductor offers many advantages to transmission construction. It allows phases to be closer together minimizing land requirements, increases reliability, supports wildfire mitigation efforts, and offers wildlife protection.
A Hendrix Spacer Cable system is extremely compact and allows for multi-circuit construction in an existing right of way. This significantly reduces project timelines and saves on land costs while also preserving trees.
